You want to display art.

But you’re not sure which work to choose.

You want to express what matters to you in a way that suits your space.

You want to display an original work that exists only in that place — not something mass-produced.

At Hakurei, we create custom-made art to answer wishes like these.
What we value is not deciding on the finished form from the very beginning.
Through careful, repeated conversations, we draw out the sensibility that lies beneath your words and refine it into a work, one brushstroke at a time.

Custom-Made Art Is a Way to Leave Your Feelings in a Space

When people hear “custom-made art,” they may imagine simply specifying a preferred color and size to have a work produced.

Of course, harmony with the space, along with size and materials, is important.

But the first thing Hakurei wants to ask about is more than just form and color.

Why do you want to place a work in that space?

What have you cherished?

How do you want those who visit to feel?

For a company, the background and philosophy behind its founding.
For a hotel or inn, the memory of the land and the atmosphere of the lodging.
For a shop, the resolve embodied in its name and the experience it wishes to offer.
For an individual, a milestone in life or words you wish to keep in your heart.

It’s fine if these have not yet taken clear shape in words.
Creating the work begins with searching for that outline together.

Spaces Suited to Hakurei’s Custom-Made Art

Hakurei’s works can be created to suit a wide variety of places.

Hotels & Inns

Lobbies, guest rooms, lounges, restaurants, bathing facilities, and more. Starting from the scenery and history of the land and the spirit the lodging holds dear, we create a work that becomes a symbol unique to that facility.

Companies & Offices

Entrances, reception rooms, meeting rooms, executive offices, and more. We express a company’s philosophy and its founder’s vision not as explanatory text, but as a single work that remains in the space.

Shops & Commercial Facilities

Restaurants, retail stores, salons, galleries, and more. We delve into the shop’s concept and the background of its name to create a space that stays in the memory of those who visit.

Living Spaces & Commemorative Works

New homes, villas, studies, living rooms, and more. Starting from a milestone in life or words you hold dear,
we craft a work you can live alongside for many years.

From Consultation to Delivery

Hakurei’s custom-made works begin with dialogue.

01. Consultation

First, tell us about the space where you want to place the work and what prompted you to consider creating it.

It’s perfectly fine if you don’t have a clear image in mind yet.

As we ask about the use of the space, the installation location, the sense of size, and your desired timing, we organize the direction together.

02. Concept Dialogue

Based on our conversations, we explore the core idea at the heart of the work.

A philosophy you hold dear.
Words that have stayed with you.
The scenery of a place.
Natural images such as light, water, wind, mountains, and cycles.

Sometimes we begin from a single word; other times, rather than showing the shape of the characters as they are, we reconstruct them into abstract brushwork.

The gradations of ink and the empty space are not mere decoration, either.

We regard them as an extension of the feeling we want to convey.

03. Creation

Based on the concept, the calligrapher creates the work by hand, one stroke at a time.

The angle at which the brush enters.
The speed of each line.
The amount of ink.
The bleeding.
The dry-brush texture.
The empty space.

Even with the same words and the same composition, no two expressions are ever exactly alike.

A momentary movement becomes, just as it is, the character of the work.

04. Finishing

We finish the completed work to suit the space and its purpose.

Framing.
Acrylic panels.
Washi-paper mounting.
Combinations with materials such as wood, metal, and stone.
Three-dimensional expression that incorporates light.

Rather than looking at the work alone, we consider its relationship with the wall, the lighting, the furniture, and the surrounding materials as we refine its final appearance.

05. Delivery

The finished work is delivered together with a certificate of authenticity.

A work does not end the moment it is delivered.

The natural light of morning.
The lighting of night.
The air that changes with the seasons.
The memories of those who visit.

As it accumulates time within the space, the work’s expression gradually deepens.

The Same Brushwork Leaves a Different Impression Depending on the Material

At Hakurei, we do not confine our expression to paper alone.

Washi paper catches soft light and gives depth to the gradations of ink.

Wood brings warmth to a space.

Metal transforms the momentary movement of the brush into a trace that endures over long stretches of time.

Stone holds stillness and gravity, giving the work an unshakable presence.

Which material to choose is not decided by visual preference alone.

The stillness a space requires.
Harmony with the architecture.
The sense of time you wish to leave there.

Through repeated dialogue, we search for the material best suited to the work.

Please Share Feelings That Have Not Yet Become Words

You don’t need to prepare a fully formed concept in order to commission a custom-made work.

You can’t quite explain it.
You only have a vague image.
Put into words, it feels slightly off.

Even from that state, creating a work can begin.

What matters is not neatly organized words.

Why is that work needed?

What kind of time do you want to leave in the space?

Through dialogue, we gradually draw out the feelings that have not yet taken form.

Entrusting Your Intention to a Single Stroke

Art is not only for decorating a space.

Simply by being there, it changes the air.

It leaves a quiet resonance in the memory of those who visit.

The more time passes, the deeper its meaning grows.

A company’s philosophy.
The spirit of an inn.
A shop’s resolve.
An individual’s memory.

What words alone cannot fully convey — given lasting form.

Through contemporary art rooted in calligraphy, Hakurei brings your feelings into your space.
